LyonByCar, Parc de la Tête d’Or
The Park of the Golden Head was designed on the model of the English garden. It integrates a 16-hectare lake created from a Rhône arm, a zoo and botanical garden.
Located on the banks of the Rhone, in the heart of Lyon, its 117 hectares, are the Parc de la Tete d’Or, the biggest urban park in France. Totally dedicated to leisure, discovery and relaxation, green areas are the scene of many activities: zoo, rides, shops, shows, pony rides, botanical garden … Everything is there to make your visit a time magical. Children of all ages, tourists, sportsmen or walkers simple, everyone will find happiness.
Contrary to what one might think, the name of the place known as « La Tête » far above the park’s creation. Legend has it, in fact, that the Crusaders will have once buried treasure in which there was a head of Christ in gold. It is said that 1855 was a psychic hired to recover the precious relic, but despite all her efforts, she was unable to determine the location. Legend or reality updates the mystery of the « Tête d’Or » has still not been solved … The creation of the park was parcle created in the 19th century under the leadership of the Prefect and Mayor of Lyon Claude-Marius in Vaïsse the aim of « giving nature to those who have none. » The completion of the park was entrusted in 1856 to landscapers Denis Bühler and Eugene and Gustave Bonnet engineer. The park was opened a year after the start of work which ended in 1861. The zoological and botanical garden party were created in 1865 and 1887 respectively. The rose garden, meanwhile, more contemporary, was designed in 1961.
There are 7 enters, the most remarkable is the door of the Children of the Rhône which opens the prospect of a lake of 16 hectares, the center of landscape composition. The vast lawns of romantic spirit alternate with groves of trees over a century old. Flower beds, beds of roses or peonies, bring in all seasons colorful and fragrant buttons. The Parc de la Tête d’Or is open to the public and admission is free.
« Les Roseraies » :
The Lyon International Rose Garden covers 40,000 square meters and has 30,000 roses and 350 varieties. There are also two other rose gardens: the Rose Garden of the Botanical Garden which traces the history of the rose, and competition rose garden that serves as support to the International New Roses Contest.
The Park offers the peculiarity of having three complementary rose gardens.
This wealth testifies to the prominence that the region occupies in the history of the rose.
The International Rose Garden covers 5 hectares and has more than 16,000 rosebushes, divided into 450 varieties.
The Rose Garden Botanical Garden traces the history of the rose through a collection of wild roses and historical.
The Rose Garden contest, dedicated to the creation of new varieties, hosts the annual international contest of new roses.
In May 2006, the City of Lyon has received the Seal of Excellence in Osaka for International Rose Garden, which only label have 22 parks in the world.
The « Zoo » :
It presents in its infancy farm animals and the herd of deer, but soon, dice, 1870, wild and exotic animals make their appearance.
Today the zoo Lyon spans nearly 10 hectares of the 105 that make up the Parc de la Tete d’Or. 400 animals were found there meadows divided into 64 species (including 30 European breeding programs), not counting the Florida Turtle Recovery Center (over 1200 individuals).
For over 10 years the Zoo continues to improve its infrastructure. Thus in 2006 the African plains is born. Life locations for more than a hundred animals (giraffes, zebras, flamingos …) it is the image of what a zoo should be today.
The zoo of Lyon is a member of EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquariums) since 2006 and therefore aims to be a place dedicated to biodiversity and conservation of animal species in danger of extinction. Thus rare species whose continued captivity is justified by their decline in nature are presented. Conscious of its role, the zoo is also involved in scientific research is a crucial mission for a modern zoo.
Finally the zoo is committed to become a place of learning and knowledge through its teaching staff. The role of education is well highlighted by visits and workshops offered to schools and colleges. Backstage tours are organized for individuals to answer questions and educate the various missions of a modern zoo.
The « Botanical Garden » :
Since 1857, the botanical garden of Lyon (created in 1796 on the slopes of the Croix-Rousse) is transferred within the Tete d’Or Park. He then enriched with plant collections of the world to be the biggest French municipal botanical garden.
The Botanical Garden of Lyon is a living museum with plant diversity of our planet. In the middle of the Parc de la Tete d’Or is an oasis in the heart of the city. This place of discovery, relaxation and conviviality invites you to admire the wealth of different collections (carnivores, orchids, passion flowers etc.) over 8 hectares of which 6500 square meters of greenhouses. It houses about 16 000 species.
It contains one of the richest collections in Europe, and thus is popular with specialists from around the world. Member of the Conservatory of specialized plant collections some of its collections are labeled national collections (araceae, Begoniaceae, bromeliaceae, etc …). It also hosts a library, herbarium, a seed shop, a scientific center needed to conduct its research and conservation.
